Pride, Privilege and Power Post Stonewall
It’s weird to realize that until this week I’d never really pondered my own coming out story. I expect more from myself.
For starters, I’m a therapist. And although I’ve seen lots of evidence to the contrary, I believe it’s incumbent for shrinks to do our own work and to reflect on our own life at a depth I wouldn’t expect from others.
Also, I was writing a memoir during the years when I came out. Who misses the boat on including that story as part of the book??!
This month is World Pride month – it’s the 50th Anniversary of the Stonewall Riots which kicked off the modern Gay Rights Movement. Which is why every podcast host and their mother is talking about Pride, Queers, Coming Out, and Homophobia.

Q
My girlfriend says she loves me but does not want kids even though she knows it’s my one dream. She also said no marriage – that people should just be together so if it doesn’t work out then you can just go your separate ways.
But when she’s face to face she says she loves me and sees a family and marriage with me. I’m so confused. Am I wasting my time? She always says one thing in front of me and then another when we are apart. Is it possible she will never change?

My Fiancée and I have been together for 4 and a half years, we are in the process of buying our first home and were planning to marry next year. Everything was going well and I love her, more than life itself, but, I went out with friends [on] the weekend and cheated on her with another girl. Someone neither of us know. I came home late the next morning and told her immediately. She is, obviously, finding it hard to cope but she is trying. I don’t want to lose what we have, but she is against seeing a therapist, for now at least. I am at a loss. I do not know why I made the biggest mistake of my life and I regret it fully.
Any advice you can offer will be gratefully received.
